FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DEFENSE CONTRACT MANAGEMENT AGENCY SELECTS CHCS SERVICES, INC. FOR WORKSITE
ELDER CARE PROGRAM
Innovator In Geriatric Care Management Programs Will Provide Elder Care
Training and Counseling
Weston, Florida, November 7, 2002 -- CHCS Services, Inc., a subsidiary of
Universal American Financial Corp. (NASDAQ: UHCO), has been awarded a contract
from the Defense Contract Management Agency (DCMA) to perform elder care
training and counseling services for its 12,000 employees domestically and
overseas.
DCMA provides contract administration services for the United States Department
of Defense and other federal agencies. The average age of the DCMA workforce is
approximately 51 years, and many of its employees are facing the challenges of
caring for an elderly relative. According to Juanita Wheeler, quality of life
manager for DCMA, "Because our workforce is aging, more and more employees have
asked for help with the often frustrating and time-consuming issues surrounding
the aging of their parents and other family members. CHCS Services' program is
a pro-active approach for us to educate and support our employees involved in
elder care."
DCMA's situation is not unique. The aging of America has propelled elder care
into the forefront of employee work/life issues. Recent studies indicate that
almost half of the workforce expects to be dealing with elder care issues in
the near future.
"DCMA is leading the way among government agencies on this important issue,"
says Gary Jacobs, president of CHCS Services. "Our program will equip DCMA
employees to better manage their own elder care situations. As a result,
employees will miss less work, have fewer workplace interruptions and reduce
their overall stress levels."
Through a four-part Caregiver Seminar Series, CHCS Services will provide DCMA
employees with information, practical strategies and tips to help them
effectively manage the daily tasks and complex responsibilities of caregiving.
The Caregiver Seminar Series will feature subjects such as communicating with
aging parents, exploring housing alternatives, planning for legal and health
care issues, and understanding Medicare, Medicaid and long term care insurance.
The seminars will be offered at DCMA Headquarters in Arlington, VA and 22 major
contract management offices around the country.
Employees may also meet in-person with a geriatric care manager for individual
counseling sessions, to help them begin solving their personal elder care
issues. Geriatric care managers are personal aging advisors, trained and
experienced experts in helping family caregivers manage the care and support of
an aging loved one. CHCS Services has a nationwide network of over 4,000
geriatric care managers, who are master's level social workers or professional
nurses.
For DCMA's primary overseas locations and other domestic locations that have
less than 200 employees, employees will access support through a video based
Caregiver Seminar Series, with electronic access to dedicated geriatric care
management specialists for follow-up assistance.
By participating in the program, employees will gain a better understanding of
their caregiving situation, be able to make more informed decisions about care
and resource options, and begin to learn practical skills and tips about how
best to plan and manage for their caregiving responsibilities, according to
Sharon Alexander Keilly, vice president of CHCS Services, who will oversee the
program's implementation.
